Richmond Park FC - Featured Team Interview
Tell us briefly the history of your team?
The Richmond Park FC G17 team started to play together at about age 8. In 2015, as an under 11 team, they won the Surrey Women and Girls Premier League. For many years, the team has competed against the likes of Crystal Palace and QPR in the Surrey Premier League.
In 2017 the team won a tournament in Copenhagen, beating the likes of Brøndby and FC Copenhagen. In 2019, as an under 15s team but having to play in G16, they reached the G16 B final of the Dana Cup.
In March 2020, the team won the U15 Surrey County Cup, beating AFC Wimbledon 3-1 in the final. In the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, the team was top of the Surrey Premier League before coronavirus curtailed both league seasons. In the current 2021-22 season, the team has just won the Surrey FA League.
The team is a great advert for Richmond Park FC’s belief in player development and player retention, encouraging players and teams to have fun and grow together. There is a great positive energy and friendship among the squad. They love playing football and encouraging each other to improve their skills and performance.
We have participated in the Dana Cup in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. We won the girls’ B Cup in 2016 and have featured in two other finals.
What are your goals and expectations for the Dana Cup 2022?
We would like to be playing football every day until the finals on Saturday 30 July. And we would like some extra baggage - a cup - to take home to the UK. Most of all though, the girls want to have fun, play good football, and meet other players from around the world.
Dana Cup has made a pledge to support the Global Goals – which goal will you play for at the Dana Cup 2022?
We will play for Global Goal 5 - gender equality and empower all women and girls. Many of the players have experience of inequality even in football in the UK, between the way boys and girls are treated and regarded as sportspeople.
