Dana Cup Is Invaluable to Hjørring

"With almost 1,000 teams and around 20,000 players, coaches, officials and family members, the Dana Cup is truly invaluable to the town of Hjørring and Hjørring municipality."

That is the message from mayor Søren Smalbro. Every year, the mayor officially welcomes two of the teams taking part in the Dana Cup as representatives of all the tournament's participants.

This year, the honoured teams were Tucumán from Argentina, competing in the Boys' U16, and Colegio Arbos from Brazil, competing in the Girls' U16 and Boys' U15 competitions.

"A previous study showed that the Dana Cup generates many millions of kroner for Hjørring, but I actually think it is difficult to put an exact figure on its economic impact. When the town's population effectively doubles during the tournament, it naturally leads to a significant increase in trade for local businesses," the mayor stressed.

"But there is also a wider, long-term benefit. Hjørring is recognised as the host of Denmark's largest sporting event and one of the world's biggest youth football tournaments. The Dana Cup puts Hjørring on the world map, and when so many visitors experience our wonderful town, some of them may well be inspired to return as tourists in the future," Søren Smalbro added.
