VV Baarlo - Netherlands - Dana Cup

VV Baarlo - Featured Team Interview

Tell us briefly the history of your team.

Our club, VV Baarlo, was established in 1927. So in 5 years the club celebrates its 100th birthday. The club is the only soccer club in Baarlo, a small village in the South of the Netherlands close to the German border, with around 6.500 inhabitants. In 2015 the club started a young girls team U17. In their 4th season, the girls became champions in the autumn competition. Unfortunately, corona made an end to the spring competition in that season. But this championship gave a boost to girls soccer in Baarlo. The girls of U17 became U19 and many girls joined to club to form a girls U15 team. Once again, corona ended the next season too early. This season, 2021-2022, the Girls U19 became champions both in the autumn and spring competition. Also the girls of U15 became champions in the spring competition. The club has now a steady girls/women department with 2 women’s teams, 2 girls teams (next season U15 and U17) and many young girls playing in boys teams. Around 1/5 of the club members are female and we hope this will grow even more in the near future.

Is it your first time at the Dana Cup if not how many times has your club participated?

It will be the first team that VV Baarlo will play in the Dana Cup, I think hardly anyone in the club ever heard of the tournament. The Girls U19 had not the intention to participate in Dana Cup at first. In 2019-2020 the idea was to play Ederbergland Cup during Ascension Day with the Girls U17, a small tournament in Allendorf-Eder, Sauerland, Germany. But due to corona the tournament was cancelled and we were looking for something different next season. After some research I came across Dana Cup and I was sold! I asked the girls what they thought about a week holiday in Denmark and playing a tournament. Well, you can guess how they reacted. I only had to convince the parents, luckily that was not too difficult. So we planned our trip already last year, but we still corona was going around and Dana Cup 2021 was cancelled. But now, finally we will have our tournament with this, can’t wait for it.

What are your goals and expectations for the Dana Cup 2022?

To be honest, we really have no idea what to expect. So we will travel to Denmark without any expectations at all. Most important, we will have fun. Many parents will join the team which means it will be a mix of vacation and playing soccer. The girls should enjoy this week from start to the end. We will visit some touristic/cultural attractions in Denmark, do some site seeing during a bike tour and of course will play some soccer matches. Of course we try to do our best during the games, but we have no idea what we can expect from other teams. We do not expect to win the tournament, but hey, you never know!

Dana Cup has made a pledge to support the Global Goals – which goal will you play for at the Dana Cup 2022?

Looking at the list of The Global Goals, there are many goals we would like to play for. If I have to pick 1 goal, I would say Global Goal 2 No Hunger. I think we can hardly imagine that in this world there are countries who do not have enough food available for everyone. Let’s hope that this will end some day, let’s hope our international leaders will make this a priority goal. We can only pray for this.
