Tell us your story - JVW - South Africa - G16
Tell us briefly the history of your club/team?
The JVW Girls football development was established in 2012 and was founded by South African Womens Football Captain and current Houston Dash Defender, Janine van Wyk, giving birth to it’s sub-programs, JVW FC and JVW Girls Schools League. These two programs give opportunity to the different levels of the women’s game. The schools league in 2017 hosted 74 schools and a total of 147 school teams stemming across all age groups namely, U15, U17 and Opens in the areas of Johannesburg and Pretoria. This is a way to improve football skills from grass root levels and help improve competitiveness and most importantly, the love for the game.
The JVW Football club caters for girls from the age of 6 all the way up to Senior National Level. In the club structure there’s a Development team (for beginners), an U14 Team, an U16 Team, a Senior Team, a First Team and a Vets Team. The First Team take part in the highest league for women in the country, the SASOL League and finished as the country’s runners-up in the 2016 SASOL League campaign in their debut appearance at the SASOL League National Championships. Janine van Wyk served as a player-coach in the teams successful year, before being signed to the NWSL.
Our youth teams consist of around 40 – 50 girls who are passionate and dedicated to the women’s game, and their collective aim is to play professionally, this is where our High level training programs come into effect, resulting in National team Selections.
Is it your first time at the Dana Cup if not how many times has your club participated?
We have travelled to the Dana Cup once before, in 2016 where we took a Junior team (a combination of some of the U14 girls and U16 girls), so this will be our second appearance at the Dana Cup to date.
What are your goals and expectations for the Dana Cup 2018?
Our goals and expectations for the Dana Cup this year are slightly different to that of when we made our debut. Before we went to gain experience and identify the different levels of womens football abroad. This year we would like to go and compete and in doing so look to progress further, potentially securing a spot in the semi finals.
